The McDonald's Filet-o-Fish Sandwich knockoff

Turn away from the drive-through and make this evenIf you share our passion for McDonald's Filet-o-Fish Sandwiches, you must try this excellent substitute dish that easily outperforms any drive-thru option. It's more than just a copycat, as Liz Mervosh, one of our test kitchen tasters, described it. It's excellent with extra sauce, cheese, and fish. The crispy breaded fish and the steamed bun provide an A+ contrast. Better still, make your sandwich at home instead of at McDonald's.

Ingredients:

  1. canola oil, for frying
  2. 4 (4-ounce) skinless cod fillets (about 4- x 4-inch large and 1-inch thick)
  3. 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  4. 1 large egg
  5. 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  6. 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  7. 1 tablespoon corn starch
  8. 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  9. 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  10. 2 cups panko (Japanese-style breadcrumbs)
  11. 4 brioche hamburger buns, split
  12. 4 (1/2-ounce each) processed American cheese slices
  13. 2 teaspoons tap water
  14. McDonald's Tartar Sauce
  15. cooked shoestring fries, for serving

Directions:

Step:No:01

Compile every component. Fill a large Dutch oven with oil to a depth of 2 inches, and heat the oil to 360 degrees Fahrenheit (182 degrees Celsius) on medium-high heat. Set oven temperature to 200°F, or 93°C. Arrange a big rimmed baking sheet with a wire rack inside; set aside.

Step:No:02

While the oil is heating, use paper towels to pat the fillets dry and then equally sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In a medium-sized shallow basin, whisk together egg, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, corn starch, flour, paprika, and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt until well blended. Transfer panko to a different shallow bowl. Dip each fillet into the egg mixture one at a time, turning to coat all sides and allowing excess to fall off. Transfer to a bowl, coat on all sides with panko. Location

Step:No:03

Add 2 fillets gently to hot oil; fry for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring gently and flipping the fillets in the oil occasionally, until they are crispy and golden brown. Using a slotted spoon, remove fillets from oil and set on wire rack that has been prepared. Keep warm in the preheated oven and fry the remaining 2 fillets in the same manner.

Step:No:04

Place two bottom buns at a time on a sizable microwaveable plate, then top each bun with a single slice of cheese. Gently mist a tiny paper towel with water, then set it inside a tiny microwave-safe bowl with bottom buns. Place a glass bowl that can be microwaved inverted over the plate. In 15 to 20 seconds, or when the cheese is melted, microwave on HIGH until the buns are hot. Buns should be carefully removed from the dish. Top buns should be placed on the same plate and microwaved for 10 to 15 seconds on HIGH.

Step:No:05

Place a fish fillet on top of the bottom buns right away, and then cover with two teaspoons of McDonald's Tartar Sauce. Serve the top buns on top right away, accompanied by shoestring fries. Continue with the remaining fish fillets and buns.
