Hamburger Casserole from Grandma

The hamburger casserole made by my grandmother is a classic comfort dish! This straightforward 1940s recipe calls for ground beef, noodles, and a creamy cheese sauce. Depending on what you have in the refrigerator, you may adjust the quantity of cheese and sour cream and it will still turn out delicious!

Ingredients:

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  3. 1 teaspoon white sugar, or to taste
  4. 1 teaspoon garlic salt, or to taste
  5. 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  6. 1 (8 ounce) package egg noodles
  7. 1 cup sour cream
  8. 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
  9. 1 large white onion, finely diced
  10. ½ cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, or more to tast

Directions:

Step:No:01

A big skillet should be heated at medium-high heat. In a heated skillet, cook and stir ground beef for 5 to 7 minutes, or until browned and crumbly; drain and discard fat.

Step:No:02

Stir the tomato sauce, sugar, salt, and garlic powder into the ground beef and simmer for 20 minutes or until the flavors meld. Take the skillet off of the burner and cover it.

Step:No:03

Boil a big kettle of water that has been mildly salted while the sauce is cooking. Egg noodles should be boiled in boiling water for 7 to 9 minutes, tossing periodically, until they are firm to the biting but still cooked through. Empty.

Step:No:04

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) while the egg noodles are cooking. Coat a 9 x 13-inch casserole pan with oil.

Step:No:05

In a bowl, combine sour cream, cream cheese, and onion.

Step:No:06

Spoon half of the egg noodles into the casserole dish that has been ready. Next, add half of the ground beef mixture and half of the sour cream mixture on top. Layers: repeat once more. Top with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese.

Step:No:07

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in a preheated oven, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
